Data Entry Instructions Benchmarks 2011

DEI is very pleased to announce that stations can begin submitting financial data for DEI's 2011 Benchmarks for Public Radio. Put simply, Benchmarks stats are the reality-based foundation every manager needs to maximize public service income and make informed decisions about expenses.  Does your fundraising cover your core operating costs?  How dependent are you on institutional subsidies?  Where's your real headroom for increasing revenue?  The answers to all these questions -- and the data behind them -- are front and center in Benchmarks this year.

Also big this year - a new, easier to use interface for entering data.  Returning stations will see data from previous years, and new stations will be prompted through data entry with easy to understand icons.  Data can be entered as you have time - come back right where you left off.  Benchmarks is provided as part of DEI membership dues. There are no additional fees to participate.

Data Entry Step-by-Step Instructions

There is a new way to enter Benchmarks this year. The data entry portal is on the web:

http://benchmarks.deiworksite.org

If you don't have this, send an email to Jay Clayton or to Craig Oliver.

Once you have logged in,

  • Click DATA ENTRY
  • Click PROFILE.  Please enter a name and email address in EVERY space indicated. You cannot continue unless you do. Click SAVE.
  • Click NON-FINANCIAL. Choose YES or NO and fill in any information you have.  A scroll bar at the bottom of the page allows you to see previous years.  You can make changes by clicking EDIT at the top of the column.
  • Click SAVE.
  • Click DATA ENTRY, then click FINANCIAL.
  • Enter your financial data in the CURRENT 2010 column. Use the scroll bar at the bottom the page to view previous years.  Remember, these are the data that make up your Benchmarks Trend Report (2006-2010 only). You can make changes.
  • Click EDIT at the top of the column, then click SAVE.
  • If you enter a number outside DEI’s parameters a yellow button will appear.  This is a flag for us and a check for you. It’s asking, “Are you sure?”  If you are, leave the number as is.  If the number is within parameters, the red button will disappear.  If a red button does not disappear, then something is wrong and we may have to talk. First, mouse over the red or yellow buttons for a basic explanation.  Then send email to Jay Clayton  jclayton@deiworksite.org  or to Craig Oliver coliver@deiworksite.org

When all financial data are entered, click SAVE.

Unlike past years, you can save and return to the form over and over, entering data on YOUR time schedule (as long as it's submitted by November 23, 2011!

Once all the data is entered and you've saved for the final time, Click DATA ENTRY, then click SUBMIT.  The system will not allow you to submit data if there are errors indicated by red flags.

Thanks for being a part of DEI's Benchmarks for Public Radio Fundraising 2011.
