Partnering with Community Based Foundations
By Amie Miller, DEI When local foundations support media, why do they do it?  And what can public radio learn about how to approach and partner with local foundations in meeting community information needs?  For the past two years, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has commissioned a survey of community and place-based foundations nationwide.  A total of 162 foundations responded to the most recent survey – half of which had supported local media and information projects in the past 12 months.  The survey found:
DEI's New Young Professionals in Public Media Group
DEI is trying to make make it easier for Young Professionals (35 and under) to connect and share ideas across the public media field.  We're excited to announce that Brooke Fuchs and Andrew Leitch, two Young Professionals on the DEI team, have stepped forward to get this initiative started. We know from other industries that "YP" groups play a critical role in helping retain, engage, and motivate younger workers.  Since fundraising is DEI's focus, we're beginning with activities for Young Professionals in development.  We will kick off our efforts with YP networking and working groups at the upcoming PMDMC.
Tech Tools: Resources for Creating Infographics
By Melanie Coulson Word clouds, and other visual representations of data known as infographics, keep the web going these days. Web users, with their diminishing attention spans, are inexorably drawn to these shiny, brightly colored messages with small, relevant, clearly displayed nuggets of information. They’re straight to the point, usually factually interesting and often give you a wake-up call as to what those statistics really mean.
